1) What does the SMG SPF-1 patch fitting do?

The SPF-1 does two jobs in a frameless glass entrance. First, it firmly joins the fixed glass panel above the door (the over-panel or transom) to the side glass panel, holding them together at the corner. Second, its built-in pivot pin holds the top of the swinging door, keeping it centred and aligned so it opens and closes smoothly together with the floor spring below.

2) Is the glass cutout template included in the box?

The pack includes basic measurement details, and most glass fabricators already know the standard SPF-1 cutout and hole pattern. However, toughened glass cannot be cut or drilled once it has been toughened, so always confirm the exact cutout and hole positions with your installer and glass fabricator before the glass is sent for toughening. A small mistake here means the glass panel has to be remade.

3) What glass thickness does it support, and can it be used on thicker glass?

The SPF-1 is made for 8 mm to 12 mm toughened glass, which covers most shop, office and residential glass entrances. It should not be used on glass thicker than 12 mm, because the internal rubber gaskets will not be able to clamp the glass properly, which affects grip and safety. For thicker glass, check with SMG or your installer for a suitable fitting.

4) Do I need to buy a separate top pivot for the door?

No. The top pivot pin is built into the extended arm of the SPF-1. It fits straight into the top patch fitting on the door leaf, such as the SMG SPF-2, so there is no need to buy or fit a separate pivot. You will still need the SPF-2 top patch on the door and a floor spring at the bottom to complete the setup.

5) What is included in the box, and what do I need to buy separately?

The box contains one SPF-1 fitting body, matching chrome snap-on covers, rubber glass protection gaskets and the connection bolts. To complete a working glass door, you will also need the SPF-2 top patch for the door, a floor spring, and door handles and locks, all sold separately.
